North Dakota To Idaho - Glacier National Park

We are currently in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho and have been here for about 8 days.  We will be here for another week or so to get some problems fixed on the RV.  We had tire wear and brake issues that turned out to be wheel bearing issues caused by defective grease seals.  We have had the problem diagnosed and are waiting for warranty approval from the manufacturer.  If you have to be stranded some place, Coeur d'Alene is a good choice - this is a beautiful city between two lakes - the people here are very friendly and accommodating - we will do a separate blog on Coeur d'Alene later in the week.

Since the last blog we have traveled from Buffalo Gap Campground in Western North Dakota to Coeur D'Alene, Idaho with several stops along the way, the most notable being Glacier National Park in far northern Montana.   Stops included the Otter Creek Fishing Access site which is a free camping area on the Yellowstone River - the River was near to overflowing its banks so we only stayed here one night.  We moved on to Court Sheriff Campground which is a nice Bureau Of Reclamation campground on a man-made lake - very similar to a COE but with no hookups.  From there we moved to Apgar Campground which is one of the main campgrounds in Glacier National Park - this was our first experience camping  inside a National Park and though we were fortunate to get a spot in the peak season, the campground definitely wasn't made for RV's as large as ours - it was a real challenge getting in and out of the campground due to tight turns, small campsites and overhanging branches. From there we traveled to Libby, MT and stayed a few days at the Fireman's Campground, a county campground in the center of the village of Libby, Montana.   We then traveled to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho and are staying at the Kootenai County Fairgrounds which is a nice place for an extended stay - it is right in town and we have a fairly private campsite with water and electricty.  This has been a good stopover for us - while waiting to get the RV serviced, I was able to get an appointment at the VA in Spokane, Washington which is just a few miles away to get some required annual blood work done, we got the oil changed on the truck, got mail and packages shipped to us and we will be getting a new set of tires on the RV once the wheel bearing issues are sorted out.

Our Route

Glacier National Park - The photos below are all from Glacier National Park - the main attraction here is the "Going To The Sun Road" which is a 50 mile long road through the park that is very narrow and winding.  Driving our large truck on this road was a little bit of a challenge - pretty much a 5 hour out and back driving test - it is about 120 miles altogether as you come back a different way..

This is late June

The Going To The Sun Road is very close to Canada - most of the Visitor Centers and businesses in the area display both flags
